My Journey

Writing is in my blood..

My mother, Dinesh Nandini Dalmia was an extraordinary and extremely gifted Indian poet, short story writer and novelist of Hindi literature. Her poetry had the mystical quality that made other littérateurs compare her with Wordsworth.

She was the sixth and last wife of Ramkrishna Dalmia, founder of the Dalmia Group. Three of his previous wives were still alive and married to him when she became his wife. Nevertheless, she positioned herself in opposition to gender discrimination and purdah  and penned over 50 books of poems, prose poems, short stories and novels on the theme of women's suffering and emancipation.

I was introduced to the world of literature by my mother, who was a renowned award winning writer in Hindi. She would ask me to read aloud whatever she had written and then write it neatly as none could read her handwriting. My first attempt at serious writing was when I edited her biographical novels. Encouraged by my mother, I started writing when I was 13. Once I started writing I haven’t stopped.

I began by writing poetry. When I read them now, I find that I have written more than I knew I was writing. If someone asked me what kind of poems I have written— I wouldn’t know how to typecast them. They are just my interpretations of a host of experiences. Life has made me run through an entire gamut of emotions ranging from fear, insecurity, frustration, jealousy, hatred and anger to love, comprehension, compassion, balance and then perhaps spirituality.

I begin my writing with a single word, thought or emotion! My writings reflect old emotions and how I dealt with them then and compare them to how I deal with the same emotion now!

I have written so much that friends and family pointed out that there was a book here. They urged me to compile and anthologize them. “One Soul: Many Lives” is the outcome!

One Soul Many Lives

A Coffee Table Book which is essentially an amalgamation of poetry and art. Each poem has renowned artists specially curating for the poems. A must for all poetry lovers, appreciators of good word and art, coffee table book collectors. Ideal for corporate gifting.

The poems came first and the artists have woven their works according to their own interpretations to suit my words. Some have especially given new works according to how they related to the poem, while others have chosen existing works that we felt matched my emotions. Each reader and viewer will interpret and match my words to the artwork according to their own sensibility and for me that is the beauty of putting it together.

I feel like I have lived many lives in a single lifetime. Each emotion in the poems depicts one lifetime. When I am in the throes of that emotion it’s like swimming in an ocean. As I cross that ocean and reach the shore and understand why I felt what I felt, the emotion gets qualified as a whole life.

My emotions perforce, find pen and paper for this was my only way of venting seething emotions that were too scared to see the light of day. When I read my words, written through the years, I find they sum me up—I am an ‘emotional being’ and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.

Hopefully, my book can help people to realize that everything in this world doesn’t have to be cut-throat competition and it’s ok to let softer emotions surface. Socially and culturally it will make the world a better place.

“Papa, how I wonder what you are…!”
“Mama, how I wonder what you are…!”
“Laxmana, how I wonder what you are…!”

Though the pattern of my life is no different from others— From loving a father, to being disillusioned; from a flowering of love in ‘girl meets boy’ to learning the meaning of fear of losing a beloved; from realizing there is something beyond the mundane, to exploration of the mysterious depths of the spiritual world.

Here the charismatic Ramakrishna Dalmia, is just another Indian chauvinistic man and I the  unloved loyal daughter in awe of my father dealing with the realities of his life that affected me and the people I loved in this illustrious family and the so called ‘rich household’.

Right from childhood I dealt with conflicting feelings for my father who I felt did not much care for my existence... leaving me with despair, disappointment and longing for love. I was brought up in an atmosphere fraught with fear and superstition, of dichotomous and paradoxical values. Even though I had been taught by my mother, early on, to rise above farcical traditions, in my adult years, I was forced to submit to them by an austere and high sounding patriarchal system.

In these books I share the occurrences that reflect failures in love, selflessness, power of money over human emotion;, love, competition and hate between siblings; about a father who doubted the intentions of his own children and a loyal wife who developed layers after layers to cope with the excruciating emotional times that left my family broken emotionally forever…

I write these books – as a saga of love, betrayal, intrigue, struggle, grief, compromise and achievement – if only to point out to the world the repercussions of what we, the Dalmias, had done and what we had failed to do.

The books would show how I, As a child and even as an adult, was torn between family loyalties and the desire for freedom and a yearning for a better life. How I first broke and then learned to bring to the fore a being that was multi-hued and multi-faceted. To show the world that the shy, introspective girl of yesteryears had learnt to become a woman of the world without losing her inner sensitivity.

The books would be a memorable read, if only to point out to the world the repercussions of what we, the Dalmias, had done and what we had failed to do.
